Every two years, counties across the US are mandated to conduct a count of homeless within their jurisdictions. The science isn't perfect, but it gives us valuable insight into the extent and causes of homelessness across the US. It is an important gauge as to the state of extreme poverty in the heartland and our own backyards.

As part of the Census, the participation of the varied stakeholders dealing with the homeless is solicited. We are doing all we can to ensure that the the greatest number is counted.

Data from the Count is critical in planning how to best invest public resources, demonstrating our region's need for federal funding, raising public awareness about homelessness, identifying the needs of homeless populations, and improving the housing and services necessary to prevent and eliminate homelessness in our region.

All volunteers who assist with our efforts to count the homeless every two years deserve a special thanks. Without you we would not be able to gather this valuable community data.

Our most current count was held January 26th, 2011. A summary report was also presented to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors and is also available for download.
